Grants, resources, and community for individuals and families across Minnesota.
Our Mission
"We believe every person living with Prader-Willi syndrome deserves dignity, community, and the resources to thrive."
What We Do
Oakwood Prader-Willi provides direct financial support and connections to services for individuals with PWS and the families who care for them throughout Minnesota.
Financial assistance to families navigating the unique challenges and costs associated with Prader-Willi syndrome.
Connecting individuals and caregivers with resources, peer support, and local services across Minnesota.
Helping families understand PWS, navigate medical and educational systems, and find the best possible care.
Our Story
Oakwood was built on the belief that parents and families, working together, could create something better for their loved ones with Prader-Willi syndrome.
A group of Minnesota parents with children living with Prader-Willi syndrome came together to create a support community — and a home — for their loved ones.
Oakwood established its first residential home in Minnetonka, MN, providing a safe and supportive living environment for residents with PWS.
As the community grew, Oakwood moved to a larger residence in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis, expanding its capacity to support more individuals.
The property was sold as most residents transitioned to smaller, community-integrated homes in the neighborhood — a reflection of evolving best practices in care and independence.
Oakwood now focuses on providing grants and ongoing support to individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome and their families throughout Minnesota.
Understanding PWS
Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare and complex genetic condition present from birth. It affects many parts of the body and has lifelong implications for individuals and their families.
PWS is caused by the loss of function of specific genes on chromosome 15. It typically involves low muscle tone in infancy, intellectual disability or learning differences, behavioral challenges, and — most distinctively — a chronic and insatiable sense of hunger that requires strict dietary management throughout life.
With the right support, structure, and care, individuals with Prader-Willi syndrome can lead meaningful, engaged lives as part of their communities. Oakwood has been part of that journey for Minnesota families since 1982.
